Hyundai's New Masterstroke
Hyundai will introduce a new model between the Venue and Creta under the Hyundai brand name in India. The new SUV is expected to be a Bayon-badged version to be sold in international markets, but will also get a totally different look, designed specifically for India.
The new Hyundai Bayon is likely to be around 4.2 metres long, a segment that has been getting popular among Indian buyers. The SUV will be marketed in direct competition with other models like the Maruti Suzuki Victoris and hence it is important that it occupies a niche position and prices itself accordingly.
Hyundai Bayon Design
The Bayon, which is expected to go on sale next year, will be more crossover-inspired than the traditionally upright compact SUVs. A relatively simple design styling is hopefully indicated from spy photos, with recognisable Hyundai design elements.
The SUV may be equipped with sleek LED DRLs with connected design elements, possibly derived from the Hyundai Verna as the front. The SUV will also feature sporty lines with squared-off wheel arches and strong body creases.
The back will also be given a different look, with the introduction of slim LED tail lamps and a flat design for the tailgate. As a whole, the new model could be given a different look than Hyundai's current SUVs.
The interior and features are of the Hyundai Bayon type. The interior and features are of the Hyundai Bayon type.
Expect an all-new dashboard layout in the cabin. From the spy shots, it looks like the SUV will have curved twin screens, lending it a newer look.
Additional expected changes inside feature a new no-logo steering wheel, new round grab handles on the door panels and lighter upholstery on the interior. Champagne gold exterior shades on a test car are also a sign that the car might be offered in a new colour.
The “Auto” badge on the fender has also roused excitement about the automatic transmission that might be available for the India-spec SUV.
Hyundai Bayon Engine and CNG Option
It is believed the powertrain will have a significant role to play in the Bayon's positioning. The SUV will probably be mated to a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and either a six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission.
Hyundai could also launch a CNG version of the Bayon in India. This may be the way to make the SUV more attractive to consumers seeking reduced operating expenses.
Hyundai Bayon Launch and Rivals
The new Hyundai Bayon is likely to fall in the middle of the Hyundai line-up in the Indian SUV segment between the Venue and Creta. The Victoris, by Maruti Suzuki, is a strong contender for its main competitor in the mid-size SUV segment.
Design and feature package may be important to make the sale, but the SUV's success will rely primarily on its pricing, positioning and marketing. Though Hyundai has not officially announced everything about the India-spec Bayon yet, more information is expected to come out nearer to its launch.
